Tokoin — From First Airport to Hospital District
Tokoin is a major district in northwestern Lomé, north of the lagoon that divides the city, separated from the neighboring Hédzranawoé district by Boulevard Eyadéma.
Historical development
Tokoin began to be settled toward the end of the 1930s, when residents witnessed the first airplane landing at Lomé's airport, then located from 1931 to 1945 on the site of today's Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital (formerly CHU Tokoin). At the time, Lomé was bordered to the north by Tokoin, then a vast forest.
Key institutions
- Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital (formerly CHU Tokoin) — Togo's largest teaching hospital, built on the site of the former airport
- Former Lomé-Tokoin Airport — in operation from 1931 to 1945
- IHERIS (Institute for Advanced Studies in International Relations and Strategy) — located on Rue Bekpo, in the Tokoin Hospital area
Commerce and neighborhood life
Tokoin is known as a bustling commercial district, with numerous shops and shopping areas.
Current character
The district today combines a major hospital function (the CHU), dense commercial activity, and proximity to academic institutions.
