Tokoin-Tamé — A Sector of the Tokoin District
Tokoin-Tamé is one of the 8 districts making up Golfe 2 commune, alongside Tokoin Wuiti, Tokoin Enyonam, Hédzranawoé 1 and 2, Tokoin Aviation, Kégué, and Atiégouvi.
Tokoin's founding history
The Tokoin sector began to be settled toward the late 1930s, when residents of Lomé saw an airplane land for the first time at Lomé's airport, then located from 1931 to 1945 on the site of today's Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital.
The district's name is said to come from its founder: Gbadago, a féticheur (traditional healer), one of the area's first residents, originally from Lébé in the Zio prefecture. He first settled at Ahanoukopé with his religious community, before establishing himself at Tokoin — a term that could be translated as "plateau" — with the agreement of Jacob Adjallé, chief of Amoutivé from 1907 to 1943.
Lomé at the time
At that time, Lomé was bordered to the north by Tokoin, then a vast forest, to the south by the coastline, to the west by Aflao, and to the east by a coconut plantation.
Today
Tokoin-Tamé is part of the residential and commercial fabric of Golfe 2 commune, whose seat is Hédzranawoé, near Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport.
